Establishment of the Strategic Livestock Breed Improvement Centre

Architectural & Laboratory Infrastructure

The structural facility was erected on a dedicated footprint within the Mohamet Lawan College of Agriculture, Maiduguri. The installation is engineered around strict biosecurity containment rules:

  • Climate-Controlled Cryo-Room: Outfitted with an isolated HVAC system running redundant dust-filtration arrays to maintain a stable ambient temperature of (), protecting delicate molecular and cellular structures from ambient heat.
  • Sanitized Surfacing: All walls are coated with clinical-grade, non-porous, anti-microbial epoxy finishes to eliminate biological contamination vectors. Floors feature continuous seamless chemical-resistant resin with integrated drain loops for routine washdowns.
  • Semen Processing Bay: Designed with one-way workflow routing separating raw input extraction, microscopic diagnostic valuation, dilution-extension processing, and liquid nitrogen freezing lines.

High-Capacity Cryogenic Machinery & Laboratory Hardware

Liquid Nitrogen Storage Arrays: Installation of two (2) master liquid nitrogen (LN2) storage vessels running long-hold vacuum insulation, capable of holding internal temperatures at for up to 120 days without recharging, paired with five (5) mobile field transport canisters.

Automated Straw Processing & Sealing Suite: Deployment of a high-precision semi-automated filling and sealing machine configured explicitly for French mini-straws, running a production speed of up to 1,200 straws per hour with zero leak tolerances.

Computer-Assisted Semen Analysis (CASA) Suite: A high-resolution diagnostic microscope setup running advanced morphological evaluation software. The system automatically measures, charts, and stores spermatozoal progressive motility, concentration indices, and structural abnormalities, logging them directly into an on-site computer station.

Technical Breeding Protocols & Herd Management Workflows

  • Semen Handling Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs): Established legal laboratory parameters governing the exact raw semen extraction times, maximum allowable time-to-dilution (under 15 minutes), and specific buffer extension ratios using standardized egg-yolk-citrate or soy-lecithin based extenders.
  • Thermal Freezing Curves: Programmed exact incremental cooling sequences, lowering straw temperatures from down to at a strict rate of per minute using liquid nitrogen vapor phases before final sub-surface submersion to prevent cellular crystal breakdown.

At BOLMA ensure the development and efficient use of grazing reserves and resources while minimizing conflicts between farmers and herders through efficient and effective feed and fodders programmes.
